“How To Make Yourself Attractive To an Investor Or a Publisher”, Lauri Antalainen, Gamefounders

A small change in the plan. Edwin is not feeling well and will be performing at the end of the day. Lauri Antalainen from Gamefounders, the ONLY gaming accelarator in Europe, has taken the stage. They have now finished with the first batch and are now looking for new applicants.

Lauri will give a short talk about how to make yourself attractive to an investor or a publisher.

First, lets talk about the main differences between publishes and investors

Publishers

  1. Have no interest in equity
  2. Take revenue share
  3. Are interested in one game and its sequels
  4. May invest in development
  5. Will invest in marketing
  6. Do not share your risks

Investors

  1. Are interested in equity
  2. Own all the games your team makes
  3. Invests in development
  4. Invests in marketing
  5. Shares the risks

For both it is essential to have great game and a great team

By this stage you should already possess a good business model and know how to earn your money. The most important part of forming relationships with publishers and investors is to fully know the person you are approaching

Publishers tend to have different requirements and are looking at different aspects in their games. What is important to some is not important to others.

Practice! As much as you can!

Gamefounders has heard pitches from 6 companies from 6 very different countries and it pains to said this, but they... pretty much sucked. Presentations were bad, but they the teams practiced their speeches and gave some awesome pitches at the official demo day.

Even if your pitches are not great at the moment, don`t hesitate to practice as much as you can. The results are worth it!

Make it visual - use slides, visuals, everything you have

  • Demo of the full version of your game is awesome
  • Slightly playable beta version is great
  • Rough video is good
  • Screenshots are probably not good enough

What happened to the first batch of Gamefounders

As said before, we had 6 teams. So far 2 teams have agreed on terms of a follow-up investment and 1 of them is finalizing a publishing deal. At the same time 2 studios are in the later stages of perfecting their games.

How good is the second one

This year we had less applications, but the overall level of applicants was much higher than before. Out of all the applicants 10 were selected just yesterday and we are expecting a very high success rate as the games themselves are more thought out than before.

And that`s it! A rapid introduction into the world of investing and publishing in the game industry.
