What is AppDynamics?

Ander Tenno

During the last few years there has been a popularity spike regarding Application Performance Management (APM) tools. The competition is fierce and one company has grown to become the industry standard. That company is Appdynamics.

AppDynamics gives you an opportunity to analyze, optimize and predict bottlenecks that often occur in complex information systems. You can do all this in real time, in product and testing environments, on-site and on the cloud.

This solution is based with agents meant for different platforms (Java, .NET, node.js etc.) and a central controller. During the last year they have also added agents for mobile devices.

You can use the solution as SaaS (Software as a Service) and also locally. The newest version is 3.9. The latest installment has seen major design and user experience improvements.

AppDynamics is different from the usual tools because of its business transaction logic. This means that bottlenecks are analyzed not just from the IT viewpoint, but also from the business side.

A business transaction is the process that kicks into motion when the user clicks on the checkout button (when talking about an online shop).

It is a fascinating product that doesn't deal with monitoring the infrastructure so much. Instead it deals with systems in production (incl. several servers and clusters, databases, services attached etc.) and the flow of various services.

In case of problems it can easily tell you where the problem lies. You don't have to search for log files anymore. AppDynamics tells you where the problem is with just a few clicks.

How does AppDynamics aid my business?

As mentioned above, AppDynamics is not just for monitoring, but also able to analyze the impact of a (web) app to the entire business. Below is an example of a real-world scenario when an app refused to work properly. Keep in mind that these are real numbers attached to a real company.

Appdynamics also tells you how much you are losing money when you app is down

Conclusion

The fast development of APM products is linked to massive implementation of software solutions and the need to get information before their failing has impact on your business.

Before these APM tools you had to rely on an army of administrators to quickly find the culprit responsible for low response times. This is ineffective and takes a lot of time.
